The Clergy Project
September 12, 2014 at 6:38 pm
http://www.clergyproject.org/
I used the search engine and couldn't find a post about this (also why does it say I can't search more than once in 30 seconds on my first search?).
I can't decide if I like this place. On one hand, it's helping atheist clergymen find a way out and on the other hand, THERE ARE ATHIEST CLERGYMEN?! I suspect most of them are atheists. I don't know how you can know the bible front to back and believe any of its bullshit. It's gotta be the paycheck.
At any rate, I thought this was an interesting place.

For the record I've never understood the delay on the search factor, either. Board software problem, I suppose.

More like bot rampage prevention.
It's frustrating when you're searching for something and you notice, as you click "search", that you've made a spelling mistake... you have to live with it for a whole half-minute....too long!
Anyway, clergy project... yes, there are people who, regardless of knowing the whole bible and all the rites and sermons, still manage to believe it all.
I think bishops and popes, at some point, must realize just how manufactured all the religion is... but the show must go on!

I guess in the long run this is good for "the cause", I was just kind of put off by the suggestion that this helps them continue their work, while fulfilling their atheistic tendencies. Something I can't quite put my finger on is off about that.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:
"I don't hang around with mostly men because I'm gay. It's because men are better than women. Better trained, better equipped...better. Just better! I'm not gay."
For context, this is the previous verse:
"Hi Jesus" -robvalue

I'm sure the paycheck can be a point, but never underestimate the power of cognitive dissonance. Take a look at how big and complex Christian apologetics is. Anyone who takes the time to really learn the Bible can just as easily really learn apologetics.
It's more about the psychological need and desire one has for the religion to be correct than it is about facts. I had heard most everything I say now when I was still Christian, yet I was unmoved at the time. If I could travel back in time ten years to debate myself, my past self wouldn't have deconverted (assuming I wasn't spooked by seeing my future self :p). I wasn't ready, yet.

I doubt very highly most clergy are atheists

More amazing then that, there are people who know the Book of Mormon front to back and still believe that pile of crap, and that shit can be proven false beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.

There are probably Scientologists who believe Xenu is still trapped in his mountain prison, with a gate powered by an Immortal Battery.
Which just goes to show, large swaths of people will believe the most outlandish bullshit, hence we have virgin births, zombie resurrection and immaterial sky wizards being acceptable. None of which is any less outlandish than the imprisonment of poor, lonely Xenu.
Free Xenu! Free Xenu! FREE XENU! It was all a TERRIBLE misunderstanding!

Yeah, I know they aren't. I was kinda being intentionally hyperbolical to express my disbelief. I should have worded it differently.
I only know the very basics of the Mormon story and that was enough to call bullshit. Although, come to think of it, I may have been a Christian when I first heard of Mormonism and called bullshit for the wrong reasons haha It may be time to arm myself with a little more knowledge of their story.

I'll tell you right now: The deeper you get, the more "what-the-fuckery" you'll run across.
And I'll tell you something else: Watching videos of mainstream Christians railing about Mormonism is HILARIOUS!!

Yeah, the whole "pot, meet kettle" thing cracks me up.
On a related note, my (Christian) wife really loves Rob Bell. His book Love Wins talks about hell just being a metaphor, not being real, and when we all die, we all go to heaven. From my understanding, this stance is mostly based on a particular interpretation of an esoteric verse about Hinnom in Joshua and the writings of a 12th century rabbi. Needless to say, Christian response to Rob Bell tends to be a very strong love-hate sort of thing. People either love what he says, or they hate it.
So, I was reading reviews of his book online out of curiosity to see how Christians received it. There was no shortage of complaints about heresy, false doctrine, and false prophets. I laughed out loud at the Christian who complained that Rob Bell's stance is weak because there's no reliable evidence to support it.
