The beheadings by ISIS were done on video. The massacres you mention were read about in newspapers. When we see a man in distress get his head cut off in a video, it becomes visceral and horrific to us. When we see some numbers on a printed page, it's just not real to us. It doesn't quite register.

Most members might be brainwashed fanatics, but the leaders don't seem like simple dumb fanatics, so I think there is a different agenda behind this. Maybe it is as you said, a way to break America, or it may be something else. But I do believe that this is not just a specific countries problem rather a global effort needs to be made against this ridiculousness.
There are many other places where this sort of savagery has been going on for years, like let's say Congo for example. And we keep ignoring them cause they perhaps don't effect us directly.
