Yeah, because if theists act bigoted toward us for no reason other than that we disagree with them- to say nothing of if they're bigoted toward trans folk!- then that's definitely our problem, and we need to change.
In fact, hey, I know! Why don't we all just become theists, since we don't want the religious bigots to think we're in any way different from them! 
So what if we're on the fringe? What's wrong with the fringe? Do you have any idea how much christianity's continued insistence that certain other fringes- women's rights and gay rights come to mind- are morally corrupt has hurt them in the past decade or so? One thing recent history should absolutely have made clear to you is that the religious right doesn't get to dictate what's on the fringe anymore, or how people react to that; we don't need to kowtow to their prejudices in order to be "acceptable" to them, and if anything it's your cowardly desire to always be mindful of their orthodoxy so as to not stray too far from it that's going to be counter-productive going forward.

I see it from a different angle: by responding with bigotry, theists show themselves even more thoughtless.
I don't doubt for a moment that there is a direct relationship between the shrinking demographics of believers and the expansion of gay rights in America. I think part of it is that Americans are finally seeing how religion is used to fuel bigotry -- and that is happening precisely because of the fight that gays have put up over the last four decades. When people see the senseless theistic bigotry against the gays they have in their own families, they're more willing to chuck the religion than they are to chuck the family member.
Well, if the religious folk want to make hay out of Danielle's gender identity, let them do so. It only brings their intolerance and small-mindedness into sharp focus. Lets us work to make religionists alienate ever-growing numbers of people, carving away fringe after fringe. Our diversity is a strength, when the hand is played properly.

Just ten years ago I might have said, "well good luck with that," but given the recent changes in how gays are perceived and treated legally, I expect it will eventually become, as you say, unremarkable.
Atheism has never exactly been a philosophy, but there is a tradition of atheists taking up unpopular causes which conflict with the Bible. Early feminism and abolition in the U.S. spring to mind. There's nothing like making moral choices with mind and gut, rather than gut and bronze age book for making moral progress.
