Mars and earth have exchanged material. If life exists or has existed on Mars it is possible it is of the same lineage of life on earth. My gut tells me that if life exists or has existed on Mars.....it is carbon based. Until someone shows me an example of silicone based life, I see no compelling reason the believe it commonly exists.

I'd agree that the probability for life to arise independently on mars than to have shared it very early in. Uf we find something carbon based, the exciting question will be to me - how different us the structure of the genes...

The way I see it life on mars is going to F#%K up religious people. How many utopias did the sky daddy create to have a personal relationship with. How many places did jesus have to die to save them? I can hear it now, Mars is where heaven will be, sky daddy is in the process of creating it for his chosen. That will put us off wanting to go to Mars again.

but just like eventually accepting that the earth is round (most of them) they will HAVE to accept science. They are living proof evolution exists, just look how religion morphs to incorporate given truth's

I'm not weighing in on a possible biological explanation for the methane, but the surface of Mars is really nasty. The low pressure, cold, UV and the peroxides in the soil, everywhere apparently, make for an EXTREMELY challenging environment for life.
Deep under the surface, however . . .

Thats what the Wonders of the Solar System episode also advertises. They say that even on earth, there might be more biomass under the surface than above - almost unbelievable
