Football: God made me
January 22, 2015 at 7:08 pm
Quote:After the Seattle Seahawks got away with an unlikely victory over the Green Bay Packers last weekend to send them to the Super Bowl, quarterback Russell Wilson had a perfectly rational explanation for his four interceptions and mostly-awful performance for the majority of the game:
“That’s God setting it up, to make it so dramatic, so rewarding, so special,” he said, alone for a moment in the locker room before heading out for the night. “I’ve been through a lot in life, and had some ups and downs. It’s what’s led me to this day.”

Why has football become such a religious sport? Because it's so popular? Are all the other sports like this? It's a symptom of religion's effort to meld with everything, even things that have nothing to do with it. I have had some people say that everything you do must in some way glorify god. Like it's not enough to think of him every day. You need to think of him constantly.

It's not the only sport where players will credit god in some way or another. If you get a person who is either religious enough, nutty enough, or shrewd enough (ie, play to the crowd... remember that this is the USA) he'll throw a bit of Jesus into everything. Russell Wilson can stand there and say that his poor performance in a game was "god testing" him so that the eventual victory would feel sweeter, and no one bats an eye. If he says "I'm an atheist" he'll get letters calling him a "fucking fuckity fucker" and "commie faggot" from a few hundred tolerant Christians.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I notice you never hear a wide receiver say "That motherfucker Jesus knocked the ball right out of my hands."

Jesus can't play defense.
Or hit a curve ball.
