All ships are watercraft. Not all watercraft are ships.

All gnostic atheists are atheists. Not all atheist are gnostic atheists.

Atheism is not gnostic atheism any more than a JetSki is a luxury liner.

I think you're making a category error here.

Wait, we're not supposed to do that?

I'm not claiming that I know jesus is mythical, I'm saying I believe it, and I find it the most likely thing. I don't know Harry Potter isn't real either, but I feel the same level of confidence.

Does that make me a mythicist? Or do I have to claim knowledge? Claiming knowledge seems indefensible.

Tell me if this answer makes some logical sense. If not, please let me what the issue with it is.

The difference between Jesus and Harry Potter is we have sufficient information to know how Harry Potter originated and we see that it is pretty much fiction (including the characters). We can even ask the author of the book series about whether or not Harry Potter is a real person if you really needed to be sure.

I can't be as confident regarding Jesus' non-existence.

And his response was basically, yes, that is exactly the problem you have when attacking the historicity question, and that he deals with it in his essays on the topic.I should try to find the linky...

You seriously don't understand the question? People attribute quotes and ideas to Einstein all the time. In fact, "Einstein" has become a kind of cultural shorthand for "a wise, urbane and tolerant smart person", with stories and memes about "him" that are often contradictory and a few actually impossible. So if I ask "is the Einstein I keep seeing referred to on the internet based on a historical person?" you genuinely don't understand what I'm asking?

I was specifically talking about Jesus in whose case supernatural properties are part of he very concept of the person. Einstein is a different matter. But the point is still that the question is not a yes/no question, for Einstein or for Jesus.

@TimOneill, thanks for the feedback.

What do you think of the mythical Muhammad theory ("The Hidden Origins of Islam" by Ohlig)?

I have little to no background in the relevant source material and so can't comment.

A random thought on the historical Jesus. The experts are nearly unanimous that the gospels are based on a real person who was crucified.

However, all that means is that the experts are unanimous that the best bet is for a historical Jesus. What if we offered them higher returns on their bet for the mythical Jesus. Would 10:1 odds entice some of them to bet on a mythical Jesus?

So you're talking about the "Jesus Christ" of faith and not the Yeshua of history? Because we're talking history.

Wow, your blog is really coming along well. Only problem: you gotta remove your pleasant, non-baby-killing face from the front page, and replace it with a gif of drunken, bloody orgies around campfires.

Just checked in again... It's really looking good. Keep up the good work.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
