RE: Archie Bunker
Wow, some of that shit would never make it past Standards and Practices nowadays.

Rob Reiner as the atheist son in law is good times.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

SO awesome the way they handled the show. I wish something like it would be able to be aired today. It would really put some of the racist/homophobic/cafeteria Christians in their place.

Memories! All In the Family and Maude were television staples in our house when I was a kid. Does anyone remember the episode when Archie and Michael got locked in the basement together and started drinking, leading to a moment of revelation for Michael as he listened to Archie describe his relationship to his own father and the casual abuse he received as a child? Sitcoms so seldom pull off the feat of being funny as hell and poignant, but AITF had the goods. Shows may be 'edgier' these days, but they seldom bite as hard as Norman Lear's shows did in the '70s.

If you like Archie Bunker maybe you will like the British show on which it's based.

RE: Archie Bunker
My dad in his younger years, was not too far from Archie as far as the racism, mixing up words, attitudes toward women and gays, vocal but uninformed on most any issue and so on.

Back then, many "dads" were like Archie. It was not an uncommon mindset, at least in the white bread SoCal Orange County of the 70s.

As a teenager, I once mentioned to my mom I was sweet on this girl. First thing out of her mouth was, "It's not that black girl is it?!?" Since there was only one black girl in the entire school of 1200 students, no mom, the odds are not good. It is safe! She was probably a proper Euro-blonde! Not a Jew either! Whew! Dodged that bullet!

Pissed me off then and still irks to this day, but what are going to do with old people?

Nonetheless, my folks watched All in the Family and quite enjoyed it, but I think the irony escaped them. With a puzzled look on his face, I remember my dad wondering what exactly was *wrong* with what Archie just said? He's usually right after all!

Yeah, Norman Lear hit the target with a few of his comedies back in the day.

Hahaha! I got about six minutes in before I realized I only understood about 10% of what they are saying :p

RE: Archie Bunker
So, was this show satire? Because the way I've heard people talk about it, I'm not sure everyone understood that...
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

It was satire, and, no, not everyone understood it to be so... including my dad, from what I can remember.
