In 2003, one, and only one, general officer resigned his commission in order to refuse executing what he considered to be ill-advised orders. I understand, as a former military member myself, the primacy of civilian control over the military; but the concomitant to that principle is that the military must provide sound military advice to those civilians, and also -- in my opinion, this isn't shared widely -- the military leadership has a responsibility to the troops to refuse to commit them to unwinnable battles.
In that sense, the general officer corps of the United States military failed both the enlisted corps, and the nation at large.
In December of 1941, von Rundstedt received an order from Hitler demanding that Armeegruppe Sud stand and fight where it was -- a foolish order that would have resulted in the destruction of that army group. Von Rundstedt immediately telexed back to Hitler, "If you want this insane order carried out, you will have to find someone else to do so." Hitler fired him. Von Rundstedt could well have been put up against a wall and shot for his impertinence, in that government. He had the balls to stand up for his troops, and by extension, for German war aims.
How is it that we here in the "land of the free and the home of the brave" have put together a general officer corps that values career prospects more than troop welfare or national interest? It is a mark of shame on us.

An attempt by the American military to predict the consequences of its actions in the Middle East?
Obama really is the anti-Christ!
