True, but it's kind of important to know theology, particularly if it commands your beheading or enslavement.

No, it is important to know that it is all bullshit and that anything it commands is invalid and to be ignored.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

As opposed to the humane practice of stoning and burning at the stake.

Bullshitting as usual. Theology or all breeds and colors is useless mirror jerking.

No. It is not.

Quote:What has theology ever said that is of the smallest use to anybody? When has theology ever said anything that is demonstrably true and is not obvious? I have listened to theologians, read them, debated against them. I have never heard any of them ever say anything of the smallest use, anything that was not either platitudinously obvious or downright false. If all the achievements of scientists were wiped out tomorrow, there would be no doctors but witch doctors, no transport faster than horses, no computers, no printed books, no agriculture beyond subsistence peasant farming. If all the achievements of theologians were wiped out tomorrow, would anyone notice the smallest difference? Even the bad achievements of scientists, the bombs, and sonar-guided whaling vessels work! The achievements of theologians don't do anything, don't affect anything, don't mean anything. What makes anyone think that "theology" is a subject at all?

That's only one side of the coin. You and Dawkins are asking: what benefit is religion? Sure, you can answer: none whatsoever.

But the other side of the coin is the harm that comes from religion.

We must study Islamic theology (at least the basic doctrine) because the stupids need to be woken up that Islam is not a religion of peace, but is on a par with Nazism. Would we say Nazism can just be ignored? Of course not. We need to identify dangerous ideologies wherever they are and protect ourselves against them.

A head in the sand approach just gets you kicked up the backside.

That has nothing to do with the theology, but rather the military capability of the Islamists, that being limited.
Studying their theology is a false lead, what is of value is the details of their logistic supply train, details of weaponry, number of recruits, level of morale, weapons training, security measures, etc.
They are not teachers, they are targets.
