Religion in the Middle Ages

If the level of civilisation correlates to believing in fewer and fewer gods, I look forward to seeing the first society that believes in no gods at all. It would most likely be the pinnacle of existence

Compare the ancient Greeks with the monotheists, like the Christians of Europe after the fall of Rome and before the enlightenment, or with some of the Islamic countries, and you will see that it isn't the number of gods that is relevant to the question.
