What do I do?

RE: What do I do?
Shell has a good point, but unfortunately, the world does not operate in such a manner; unfortunately, we do not work to better ourselves, we work to profit. It all boils down to the question 'what can I do to enable myself to do whatever I want?' That is why I am studying to become an investment banker when I would love to be an engineer who builds and designs new technology.

Unrelated: I was reminded by Shell's aphorism 'to blow smoke up one's ass' of its origin, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobacco_smoke_enema
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Hmmm...

My comment here seems to have disappeared. Maybe I hit the wrong button, maybe posted it in another unrelated thread or someone deleted it.

So I'll post it again.

You're right. It does boil down to what will enable me to do whatever I want and what he wants to do is obviously Information Security.

Being an engineer seems to be what you want. Unless, of course, you mean do whatever you want in a monetary way. In which case, I have to say, that is not the question. Don't get me wrong, it's important to make enough money, but he can obviously make enough, either way. Therefore, in my opinion, that should be of little concern when it comes to choosing which school he will attend.

A degree is a worthless piece of paper... so who cares what the label on top says.

I say go with whichever school gives you the knowledge that you want.

Cambridge is impressive on paper. But you and I both know that the CIS world is more about performance and knowledge than where you went to school.

I do Open Source, so I would probably tend to gravitate away from anything with a microsoft logo on it (Cambridge)...

But, don't think about monetary compensation, or which school would give you a better paying job...

Fuck it... Money isn't happiness.

Analyze your goals. If you would like to work for MS in the future, Cambridge is probably a better bet...

But, if you're after knowledge, as opposed to a specific job, go with what you want to learn about.

Adrian,

All I'm gonna say is,

Considering your own preferences for Royal Holloway, and also considering what you said here:
Adrian Wrote:If I decide I want to do research, I could always apply for a PhD in Cambridge at the end of 2010. If not, I can go get a job like a normal person.

If you truly feel confident you can always fall back on Cambridge if it doesn't work out or whatever, I say go with Royal Holloway.

There's my opinion for whatever it's worth or not.

I could answer this for you but then this site would need to carry an XXX rating.
