They both have their niches, DC long distance transmission lines are the favoured solution and 24VDC is the industry standard for control systems. When it come to rotating equipment though, you have no choice other than AC.

Long-distance DC transmission was not an option in Edison's time as the electronics which make it practical were a long way off.

I'll add my opinion that Edison was a complete prick. One his gems of philosophy was that ethics has no place in business.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I'm with you. Tesla was working on wireless power over a century ago. Think how uncluttered my room would be if he'd been allowed to perfect it.

RE: Edison and Tesla
Tesla, great as he was, is often overhyped for his speculative inventions - and while he arguably was a better theorist than Edison, he to my knowledge fell behind the cutting edge when he failed to really learn the up to date developments in electromagnetic physics. At least that's what I read... His ideas about wireless power were doomed to fail not bc dark powers kept him from realizing them, but bc of basic physics. There is nothing revolutionary in that area he could have invented that wouldn't be relatively obvious to contemporary engineers.

In the United States, the car named for tesla would not run but for the electricity from utilities likely named for Edison.

I don't think the discussion is complete without linking to this.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Longest comic strip ever, but so awesome.

I apologize if you get lost in the oatmeal.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

In defense of my alma mater, Tesla has, like others, made X-Rays and observed their effects before Roentgen, but without understanding their importance and publishing the results in an adequate manner. Great science is made when upon observing a strange phenomenon, it is further investigated, its importance realized and the result communicated to others. That's what WC Roentgen did, independently.
