@Eilonnwy: You have some sound advice in your post. I'm not the kind of person who would go around challenging peoples beliefs anyway. I am honest if someone brings it up however. I intend to let my kids decide on their own of course, but the idea of one of my children becoming a fundy makes my shudder nonetheless.
The extra wrinkle in all of this is that my wife has a semi-public job in this town. It could be quite damaging to her if I walked around with a "Jesus Sucks" kind of t-shirt, as much as I might find that kind of thing amusing.

No problem. I think it's important to remember that not saying anything is not lying. If religion doesn't come up, all the better. I mean if I'm in a room with people and they're discussing the fact they went to church on Sunday, do I have to say that I don't go to church because I'm an atheist? No. I don't need to inform everyone I meet just to be true to myself.
I'm the type of person that advertises my atheism, but I do so with a purpose in mind and in certain situations. I like bringing attention to atheism so people are aware of what atheists really are and to combat negative connotations. However, you're a working married person with children. Your priorities are different from a 25 year old single lady who wants to seek a political commentary as a career.
However, I can understand wanting to talk and discuss atheism, hence I suggested a local group. But even coming to a place like this, despite not being local, can help you have discussions with like minded people. I realized when I started to really get into the atheist and skeptical movement that I may want to discuss it with everyone, but not everyone wants to hear. So joining Boston Atheists and coming here let's me channel those thoughts so I can have a good time with my religious friends and not cause friction. I have plenty of Christian friends, a few Jewish that I love dearly and don't think any less of for being religious, and they don't judge me either. There are a lot of people like that, I'm sure you'll find some.

I'd like to see more people wearing stuff like this! The believers are always running around wearing shirts proclaiming how wonderful their particular brand of mythology is. I was at a County fair last year when I saw a teenager wearing a T-shirt that read something like, "Dear God, Why do you allow all the fights, drugs and crime that take place in my school? Signed, Concerned Student" The back of the shirt read, "Dear Concerned Student, I'd like to help, but I was thrown out of your school. Signed, God"
I wanted to grab this dumbass and explain the stupidity of his shirt. (Like schools were a crime-free, drug-free, conflict-free panacea before the Supreme Court ruled that prayer is unconstitutional in public schools!)
I came across a website that sells T-shirts that say, "God is imaginary". I keep thinking I should get one.

God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?

T-Shirt Hell has some really good ones. It's not all religion based stuff. It's mostly just T-shirts that are in really bad taste. Funny stuff! Most of them are things I'd never where in public for fear of getting my ass kicked! Ha!

I am in New York and this place is like a melting pot of all religions and sects you can think of. So I get my fair share of everything here, but I am finding that atheism is growing in this city slowly but surely. If they don't become atheists there is also an alternative religious explosion here where people are turning to religions practiced in the East etc. I keep to myself but I never hide my atheism from anyone, if asked by a christian about Christ I tell them straight away that I am an atheist and I have no use for their god or any god for that matter.

I lived in this suburb for nearly 20 years. I honestly could not tel you where a single church is located and can't actually remember seeing one. Nor do I know anyone who actually attends church. Many Australians view regular church goers as pretentious or mentally unwell,and avoid them ,especially when this suspect behaviour is accompanied by eschewing alcohol
My city is known as "The City Of Churches' ,as well as the bizarre murder capital of Australia. Frankly I've always seen that as a bit of an over reaction to all those churches.
In recent years there has been a pleasing tendency for people to use old churches in useful and imaginative ways.Eg private domiciles,professional suites, nightclubs, brothels,that kind of thing, (OK,I'm lying about the brothels ,but it's only a matter of time)
