Proud of my state for once!

Proud of my state for once!
I have never been so proud of Missourians.

At least our kids aren't bigoted assholes.

Watch: Students took on the 'God Hates Fags' church and won

Quote:Students forced members of the Westboro Baptist Church to flee – after the hate group tried to protest a transgender homecoming queen.

Kids at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri elected their classmate Landon Patterson as homecoming queen last week, with overwhelming support from the student body.

However, the news attracted hatred from the anti-gay lobby – with the Westboro Baptist Church attempting to stage a protest outside the school.

It did not go their way, however, with a large group of counter-protesters rallying to drown out the group.

The students carried signs reading “Love wins” and “Westboro Baptist Church needs Jesus”, while chanting “long live the Queen”.

Patterson said previously: “Going in, I didn’t know what to expect.

“I’ve dreamt about it, freshmen year like ‘oh I wanna be that girl out there walking’.

“To have my students and friends vote for me, makes me feel welcomed and loved. For who I am.”

Pro-Landon supporter Brian Scheetz told KFVS: “We want to show that Landon is a part of our community and a big part of the school. As a friend of my son’s, we’re just here to show our support.

A Christian told me: if you were saved you cant lose your salvation. you're sealed with the Holy Ghost

I replied: Can I refuse? Because I find the entire concept of vicarious blood sacrifice atonement to be morally abhorrent, the concept of holding flawed creatures permanently accountable for social misbehaviors and thought crimes to be morally abhorrent, and the concept of calling something "free" when it comes with the strings of subjugation and obedience perhaps the most morally abhorrent of all... and that's without even going into the history of justifying genocide, slavery, rape, misogyny, religious intolerance, and suppression of free speech which has been attributed by your own scriptures to your deity. I want a refund. I would burn happily rather than serve the monster you profess to love.

Awesome kids.

Seriously, things like this make me have hope for our future.

I am honestly starting to believe the future is getting better and better. Steven Pinker all the way.

I only really worry about world war 3 and climate change now. Humanity has become slowly less bigoted over the years and maybe one day, ONE DAY it will be a very rare thing and it will be the bigots that are considered "weird".

And after that... maybe we can have peace on earth.

Climate change needs to be dealt with though.... and I'm talking a longggggggggggg time in the future.

Damn, wish I had known beforehand.

I could have taken a pickup load of pitchforks and torches and admonished the kids to take it to the next level . . .

The crazy thing is, I was in  KCMO for that event, this past weekend. I saw all the Homecoming kids (all dressed up - so adorable!) all over the Plaza. There were a few kids I noticed who looked like they were possibly drag queens, and large number of girls who appeared to have taken out a gay boy as a date, a point I remarked to my Beloved in an almost condescending, "do they realize he's not interested in her?" kind of way. Now I realize I was the blind one!

I wish I'd known about the event; I'd have congratulated every kid I saw.

I'm moving to KCMO here in the next month or two. I'll also be in town in 2-3 weeks, once my Beloved makes her next doctor's appointment (so I can be there for the sonogram).

Make sure you visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. It is said to have the finest collection of Chinese art anywhere in the world outside of China. And from visiting art galleries in other cities, I think that may be true. Their Caravaggio is nice, too. It is a much better art gallery than one should expect to find in a cow town.

I lived for almost four years just 30 miles from Kansas City.

The NAMA is amazing, I agree. The city's fountains are also pretty amazing; according to city promoters, they have the highest number of statue-fountains of any city but Rome, Italy.

I don't wish to live permanently in KC, but it's the best thing in this part of the country, other than Chicago. And just like Chicago, it's a great city overall but is located in a terrible, redneck-infested locale that somewhat diminishes its potential awesomeness due to the laws and attitudes of the state(s) in which it is located. Undecided

Unfortunately for me, I'm on the Kansas side. And I haven't seen anything as hopeful around here.
