Wow. Now blokes who claim 'I read it for the articles' won't be pathetic liars that fool no one.

Ancient, obscelescent medium finally admits internet exists and has decided to change a good decade or so late.

Not sure how they will fare. It's on the same lines as the Hustler or Penthouse suddenly deciding on serious journalism. There's certainly no shortage of lifestyle magazines on the market and I can't imagine Playboy being bought for that. To me, it seems, as if they're swapping a shrinking audience for a non existing one.
I can understand the thinking, sort of, but I'm not sure they have a meaningful plan here to deal with the situation. Perhaps the better plan would be to fold.
I think the way to compete with internet porn, if there is one, is to focus on being erotic rather than explicit. And they already have a rather extensive internet- and tv empire. My guess is, their print edition will fail sooner rather than later. They already made massive losses with that in the USA. Print is suffering all over the board right now and the market is very competitive. I wouldn't know how a functioning business model should look like for a brand who's Unique Selling point was pictures of naked women. Because, let's be honest. Nobody bought it for the articles.
Yeah. The assumption that there is a profitable alternative direction may be flawed.
It's adapting. No way to compete with the amount of free porn on the net. It isn't becoming anti porn, just shifting focus. Will it work long term? Readership went up after the shift, but will it hold long term?
