Reagan got a pass for quite a few things.
Despite his brazen pandering to the Religious Right, old Dutch rarely set foot in an actual church.
He was divorced and remarried.
The Religious Right was mortified with Patty and Ron Jr., but never seemed to realize that they were (in the view of the RR) the kind of kids you would expect Hollywood types such as Ron and Nancy to raise.
Nancy consorted with an actual witch (as defined by the RR), but she was never criticized for it despite any number of those same RR people who would have been happy to stop by and pray with her instead, but they were never asked.
Ron made it absolutely clear, he would not constrain any of Nancy's behaviors, regardless of the outrage or controversy she garnered, he had not a particle of any traditional view of the Biblical point of view of how he was the master of the household. And again, the RR demurred.
While not quite a 'scam' (but close?), Nancy had an arrangement with all the Washington DC florists, anyone who ordered flowers for her, Ron, the White House, would receive an acknowledgement of the gift, the order would then not be filled, and Nancy would receive a monetary credit at the florist for the flowers she wanted to send. Kind of an improved form of re-gifting !
And I reiterate, Ronald was not bashful at all about pandering to the religious right and moral majority types, but he felt not the slightest inclination to evince any Christian principles. And the religious right folks of the time had not the slightest problem at all with his transparent and gratuitous pandering.
Disturbing, despicable, and detestable, all the way around.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

That was before the internet.
