There's been a tendency for Mormon apologists to, after mucking about in LDS history, to have a crisis of faith and leave the church.

I'd consider them to be equivalent to the proverbial canaries in the coal mine.


As for our imaginary "Mormon_Lady", just imagine how much more intensely Catholic_Lady would have to be in her persona to be as successful with so much less to work with.

Of course, the Big Bang Theory doesn't even have something coming from nothing.  It's instead everything condensed into a singularity which then exploded.  The how/why that singularity formed is, to date, impossible to determine because known physics breaks down at that point.  But the theory most definitely doesn't have stuff magically coming into existence.  The stuff was already there.  It just violently (and hotly) expanded.

So he didn't even know what he was attempting to argue against.

The BBT is one of the more silly theories of creation.  It was dreamed up by a Catholic priest so that explains part of its silliness.

The process of creation is still happening, even in galaxies that are dying like ours and Andromeda.

The Epicurus thread reminded me of a conversation that I once had in university with an extremist christian kid. 

It was after a physics class and a group of us had gone down to play pool in the student hall.  The kid asked me if I believed in god and I said not really and then he started ranting about the day's class.  The conversation went something like this:

Kid:  "The big bang theory is obviously wrong.  I don't know why we study it at all."
Me:  "Well, there's significant evidence to support the theory."
Kid:  "Can't be..."
Me:  "Why?"
Kid:  "Obviously because you can't create something from nothing."
Me:  "Well, by that logic, where did your god come from."

Kid:  "He's god."


Of course, it ended up with me explaining to him that that made zero sense using his own logic and asking why can't he simply accept that while there is evidence supporting the original origins of our particular universe, the overall understanding is beyond our current ability of understanding.  Its fine to make something up if you need the comfort to sleep at night but its no better than believing that glitter farting magic unicorns are real.


Is it just me or do most conversations with theists just end up being similarly idiotic?

In my experience yes, most of conversation ends just like that with believers babbling about eternal god, wickedness of atheists or just dumb stare. IRL I do not talk with theists about faith for a reason.
