Whatever their reasons, three cheers for the Utah GOP primary voters who didn't just fail to support Trump, but stomped his guts out.  And better yet, if Trump is nominated, polls show Utah voting blue---it'll match their skys  and their mountains.  It will also change the political map irrevocably. The mormons are more moral than the evangelicals even if they must vote for an evangelical like Cruz to show it.

I really really hope this is the case if Trump becomes the nominee but I don't share your optimism about this changing the political map irrevocably. It maybe the case that Utah turns blue this election cycle, but why should that mean that it can't go red again in 2020?

I think mormons voted against Trump for all the reasons one ought logically to expect evangelicals to, i.e. he's an immoral, swearing, lying, pretend christian with three or four ( I lose count wives). I think the difference is economic (unlike the Bible Belt and the rust belt, Utah is doing fine in the new information and high tech age,). And while the South and Southwest may feel threatened by Hispanics, Utah does not. Nor do its citizens worry about their jobs being shipped overseas.

I see Trump as the revolt of the blue collar worker (it's a lost battle, and it's lost to economics not politics) and the racist who makes a conection, however illogical between lost jobs and immigrants. Add a few authoritarians, a few celebrity worshipers, and the credulous who think a man who can make a few billion out of many millions in real estate can do anything, and you have the Trump voter..

Nothing political is ever irrevocable.  And perhaps the mormons are simply voting with Romney.   But I think tney are voting with their much more reliable pocket bookks
