The thing is I'm not saying you don't believe that. I'm saying, why Atheists gather and support one another, is because they see the idea of submitting to a person claiming to be the representative of God problematic and something they feel they need to support one another from society pressuring them to do so? You have no empirical evidence of many things not existing, but you don't make a whole support group revolve around that idea.
Here's a very recent example of why there are atheist forums:
http://www.patheos.com/blogs/progressive...rosecuted/ "Victim of faith healing wants parents prosecuted" It's scum parents like these! You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. Is it accurate to say people gather to support one another of Atheism to avoid submitting to any person claiming to represent God? Atheists don't gather to support each other out fear of believers. We gather because it gets tiring feeling like the only sane person in the room.

We "organize" to prevent people with a bronze age version of morality from attempting to legislate that morality for everyone.
Yes, we resist the idea that seems to be part and parcel with religious belief that the way you live your life should be the way I live mine. I don't want YOU dictating my morals. I couldn't give less of a shit about your god.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

The root again of the issue. This seems why Atheists generally come together? If there was no religion, again, people would not care about the issue of God existing. And it seems the problem lies that you are not satisfied with any of the systems of submitting to God out there or to the divine, that none of the claimants to the truth satisfy you. That is why you see there is a need to oppose religion all together. And what easier way to do that but to oppose the central figure which they rely upon, God? I'm not saying this why you disbelieve in God, but at the end, why you argue against believing in God is to do with the fact people submit to representatives and people claiming authority on his behalf? But that is a different motive than originally said by most people. A lot of people seem to see the need to oppose God idea of belief, because of the pressure of society to submit to some representative of God. It dictates on how people "act". Ah, but this exactly what I'm saying. People don't care about God, but the fact that there is people saying "this is the path to follow", this "is what you must follow or submit to or be or do". |
