These increasingly intrusive systems are just as easily turned on their owners.

Tell me about it. My own family has a history of fighting fascism during the first half of the century. First in the Austrian civil war, later on in the Spanish one where my grand uncle commanded the coastal defenses of Bilbao. But lastly it took outside interventions to get rid of fascism - at least for 70 years, as it turned out.

It all depends on if the police and the armed forces consider themselves part of the people or part of the ruling class.
