Force of a 12V push-pull electromagnet switch
Is 0.4N enough force to push down the top of a typical air freshener/aerosol can?

Not entirely sure but it's only 40g equivalent. Seems a bit light to me. Get some weights and prop them on the aerosol, I would think you'd be needing a few 100 grammes at least.

You are probably right. Might have to have to put an elastic band around the can and over the button to reduce the force needed. Have it teetering on the edge so to speak.  Or just get a few of them Smile

.4 N sounds way too low. That's the weight of a mars bar or so. I wouldn't be suprised if you needed 10 times that or even 10N (1 kg)

Don't bother re-inventing the wheel.

Order one of these and scavenge the mechanism for your project.  Less than $10 on Ebay.  Has a timer circuit in it too.  I think the slowest setting is a 1 second blast every 30 minutes.  There are a couple of faster settings.  Even the little cans of air freshener they sell for these last 2 months at the lowest setting.
