My parents? Where to start...

Well, Da was a farmer and managed to be one without owning slaves. My mother was a surgical nurse. They were both highly supportive of all seven of their children, and Da was always giving good advice like, 'Whatever you do in life, make sure it doesn't involve buying any slaves.'

They started the farm with a wedding gift of 100 acres, and by the time I left home, had managed to increase that to around 4000. Mostly pigs and sheep, a lesser number of cattle and horses, and no slaves.

We were punished as children, but never physically or verbally abused, and our parents never threatened to sell us into slavery.

All in all, my parents were the wisest, kindest, finest people I have ever known who didn't own slaves.
