Interestingly, Churchill was reported to have exclaimed: "This event should be immediately classified since it would create mass panic amongst the general population and destroy one's belief in the church."
Maybe I'm naïve or not as intellectually bankrupt as the government fears, but I don't think the discovery of alien visitors would start mass panic, alien invaders is a separate issue of course. Though its seems unlikely but would the advent of interstellar visitors from across the void really destabilize religions to the point where politicians felt they were duty-bound to keep the faith above the truth?
