Coming in December ... "Rogue One"

Also looking forward to another round of people whining about a female main character...

I am sure there will be plenty of other things to whine about.  For example, imperial storm troopers could not only not shoot straight, cohorts of them now can't even handle a single man with just a staff.  Did you see the pile of dropped storm trooper corpses around the man swinging a staff?

I use to think a line of musketeers from the 18th century could defeat any legion of imperial storm troopers. Now I think a Macedonia phalanx could do the same.

I scream "mary sue" not because she is supposedly strong, but because she is supposedly a guttersnipe who is somehow born better than Han Solo in piloting Millenium falcon and Better than a trained apprentice in light saber fights.  The story is written like a sloppy fan fiction in which the character Rey is the author's fantasy of herself.

You want the story based a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away to be realistic?  Huh

I agree that having a character so unusually capable can be a sign of lazy writing, unless it is somehow justified by her back-story or progeny.

A back story about why a quest is easy for the main character doesn't make a movie about a easy quest any less uninteresting. That they need such a backstory rather than make a good movie that stands on its own is the indication of laziness, or more likely incompetence.

No. I want it to be interesting. Certain fantasy stories are good, ones in which the main character comes equipped with everything and overcomes everything through sheer unearned natural talent are by definition not good or interesting.

It's another comic book movie. Don't get your hopes up.

I have to argue against myself now because I really hate this kind of comment.

There's realism, and then there's plausibility and consistency with the self-imposed rules of the story universe (The SW universe establishes that certain people are forc-ey and therefore have superhuman capabilities. If a character isn't that, they should exhibit human-like capabilities). I really hate it when people dismiss scifi fantasy stories as something that doesn't even deserve enough thought to be as self-consistent as possible. I hate it almost as much as the crowd who'd say "Jurassic park is just a monster flick, so why should we expect anything but dumb action". I guess that's precisely the target audience that convinced Hollywood execs to let everything go to hell.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

You're right, and as long they make money that's what we'll get, in the main. Treasure the rare pearl you find after the pigs have passed through.

Yeah, what are we going to watch her change her pads trough the movie?!! I mean girls can't even perform gym class when they're bleeding from their wherevers and I'm supposed to believe she's saving the fuckin' galaxy!! I mean give me a break. Not to mention where does she buys her bras all the time to keep those boobs from not bouncing too much while she's performing action stunts.

But in all seriousness I find it kind of a relief to see females in leading roles in action movies because it seems to me males have really started being annoying: you know how it is they have to be super ripped and you know they have to take off their shirt in first 20 minutes and they have to be really super bad ass with enchanted strength and then they give interviews how they got in shape, what exercises they did for each day, what they ate, while they should have better spent that time learning how to act. And since there's still enough taboo on female body it is logical that females are doing the roles men were doing up until 20 years ago.

To be honest this trailer did make it look kind of interesting as if they're trying to show how is it to live during imperial occupation.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I am super Stoked! I loved ep 7, naysayers can eff off. Dont likeit? Fine, go cry in your wine with other haters, no need to rain on our parade, though most haters talk about these movies more than the fans! Lol.
She's no Mary sue any more than a million other heros written through time. It's a cheap way to knock female leads. It is rarely aimed at male characters even when it fits. And it shouldn't be automatically negative, that connotation only came much later.

I'm even more excited for rogue one, though. A great idea to tell us these side stories!
