Seeking solace in a mad world

RE: Seeking solace in a mad world
Welcome. I used to live in the Ga./Carolinas border area (about 30 mi. from Cullowhee).

Welcome to AF, sir.  Out of curiosity, what fascinates you the most about history?

Well, my home is on a farm, 15 minutes to the nearest store or restaurant. No cell coverage, TV and internet are both satellite (the internet is the worst). I'm only 45 minutes from Raleigh, so culture is not too far away. I miss being closer to it, though. I'm having a hard time in the old farm house, and an even harder time trying to keep a good relationship with my wife's relatives who are all politically and religiously conservative. My wife is not, but she never wants to talk about anything... So, I'm here, hoping to get into some good conversations, stretch my brain a little, as it were.

Thanks,
Andy

Update - rocking the chops as of last week. I'll update my pic when I get a good shot. =D

I am Andy, and I just joined. Unsurprisingly, I am a liberal atheist. I live in rural North Carolina, so I keep my atheism in the closet most of the time, and I joined because I would like a place to discuss and maybe vent from time to time. No big back story... I'm a father, I teach history, I speak a little Japanese, and I can't decide between a beard or just big sideburns.

I look forward to  joining in on your discussions... Thank you!

Welcome!

What level do you teach history at?

Kernel,

I'm fascinated by culture. The little overseas travelling that I have done has shown me how different cultures are, and I enjoy exploring how humans were built over the years. I used to be something of a weltschmerz, wondering why people act the way they do. Now, I'm more of a curious observer (one of the many weights lifted off my shoulders when I became an atheist).

Japanese history is my hobby, although I have taught and enjoy just about all facets of the subject. I like teaching it, making students think and analyze. Hopefully giving them a taste of some of the less popular or well known histories that we white people tend to ignore.

Thanks for asking,
Andy

So... I just noticed the 2nd page. I'm replying to a few questions.

c172, I lived in Asheville for 10 years. Man, I miss it. I know the area well.

Egg, I teach 7th Grade. My curriculum is world history from 1400 CE to modern day. Have you read 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' by Martin, or any of the Dunk and Egg novellas?

Primordial Bisque, Konnichi wa! (^_^)

Thanks again for the interest,
Andy

Asheville and the rest of Buncombe County was very cool (a housemate went to UNCA). I'd go back if I had reason to. I was in Highlands (Macon/Jackson Counties). Nice for what it was, but not for spending a long time.

Welcome Andy!

Be sure to let your atheist out every day for light and fresh air. Wouldn't want it developing rickets.
