I have heard a theory that kissing originated from when babies were fed by their mothers chewing food and passing it directly to their mouths in the days before devices to break down food were invented.

Given the flood of emotions which accompany kissing, I'd have to say it's instinctive. Those hormone cascades don't just appear out of nowhere.

I get a similar feeling from hugging too. Any closeness is nice and can change from comforting to sexual depending on the mood.
