I have often wondered about this myself. Needless to say I think the odds of us being alone are nil. The real question is will we ever meet them?
To us the universe seems huge. But even a house with a small yard seems huge to a toddler. Would the universe really be so huge to a people that had eons to figure out to traverse its vastness?

Ok so my undersranding us that intelligence evolved in our ancestors as a response to climate change (rainforrest to savannah). I don't see climate change as all that rare an event.

On the state of possible life on other bodies in the Solar System, there are 4 main candidates; Mars, Europa, Ganymede and Titan.
Mars has lost the bulk of its atmosphere and oceans leaving whater is left to bury itself in the ground.
Europa and Ganymede are icebound oceans similar to the Earth in the Cryogenian period which would tend to indicate that life would be unicellular.
Titan is exceptionally cold and thus likely rather slow in developing.

The problem with that claim there is billions of stars planets etc to say were  the only one is quite absurd.
If there is other life out there we wouldn't know because of the light were getting from distant starts, moons, planets etc
are millions to billions  year old so we don't exactly have a updated picture of those said planets. Then  the other side of it 
we  could be the first advanced life forms and well the only one which is depressing.

Current issue of Scientific American has a discouraging article on radiation effects on the brain. The implication being long duration space flight may not be feasible due to brain damage from cosmic radiation.

Might be another reply to Fermi as to why they ain't here, interstellar flight isn't feasible for organic brains. Even long flights around the solar system might be iffy at best.
 The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Gawdzilla can speak for himself, but I assume he has confused Fermi's Paradox with the Drake equation. Easy and understandable mistake in my opinion.

And why does interstellar flight need to involve organic brains?

To be honest, there is no evidence of other intelligent life anywhere except upon the planet where we currently reside.

Therefore, it is perfectly logical to make the appropriate assumption.
