Do we need the NSA?

To be fair, I did intend that, in this scenario, they would have to give up the absurdly-large scale (over a billion spied on at one time, if the Snowden cables mean anything) spying, and the name change would have to be part of a larger cleanup. I'm sorry I didn't make that clear.

Even if you were to try to clean their name the damage has been done. If you were hired to help clean the Ku Klux Clans image, you would be foolish to even attempt it and your name would also be tied to them as well. The only way for the N.S.A to clean their image would be on live T.V or a stream to destroy all the files on everyone they monitored, and release all of their methods used to allow tech company's to better protect their customers. When I mean destroy, I mean every server, every filing cabinet by means of a EMP bomb. After that drop high explosives to make sure that files and servers are destroyed. Then only allow U.N tech inspectors to make sure that everything is gone. That would been a great T.V special to watch.

If this was to happen, there would have to be a new bill that does not allow for monitoring of any one, without a supreme court order. Then you have to set-up a third party that is not government affiliated to keep close watch on every aspect of any agent keeping tabs on someone. I know it seems s lengthy approach to a problem. But, after this massive process is done that is when a lot of us would feel safe again.

Really, the only hope for anything resembling reform is if something like the Denazification process wound up happening within the US government, and Jah knows that will never happen.

I've heard a rumour that the head of the NSA has said it wasn't wire tapping that was ordered for Trump tower, but a baby monitor...

I think every nation needs some sort of intelligence agency. They only become a problem when they start acting outside the law. So yes, the NSA is probably needed but they also need more regulation.

The thing is, we already have three famous ones: The FBI, the CIA, and the NSA. The FBI spies on American criminals, the CIA gathers intel on other governments (and occasionally overthrows them), and the NSA spies on everyone else.

Officially, there are 16 intelligence agencies in the USA, and bizarrely, the FBI isn't actually one of them. Some of them make since, since they're for specific branches of the military, but there still seems to be a lot of room for merging and reforming. Granted, I don't know the ins and outs the whole United States Intelligence community, and I probably would get jailed if I did and talked about them here, but there seems to be a lot of fat that needs to be cut and shit that needs to be rearranged.

Why is it not potentially a good idea to take the good stuff about the NSA (like the cryptography and all the stuff they hire math majors for), make it part of the FBI's job, and give up the "National Security Agency" name and all the "spying on what everyone is doing, even if they're not criminals" thing?

I agree with you that the US has a lot of intelligence agencies and merging a few would be a good idea. I don't support any agency spying on people who aren't criminals either, hence the part about more regulation.
