Emmy Noether

discovered the most important theorem in all of theoretical physics on which literally everything in physics nowadays is based. And that wasn't even her main line of work - she was busy being one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century, and the famed Noether theorem was kind of a side project to her. It links the existence of conserved quantities such as energy, momentum, charge etc. to symmetries in nature. This deep insight made it possible to construct all of modern physics based on symmetry principles, i.e. what the guys in my last post based all their stuff on. She was denied a proper academic position because she was a woman, but fortunately David Hilbert, the most important mathematician of the 20th century, recognized her genius and worked in her favor. When the Nazis gained power, she fled from Göttingen to the US and became a professor at Bryn Mawr college. Her and other Jewish mathematicians' departure from Göttingen basically wiped out what was then the most important center of mathematics research in the entire world.

Heinrich Hertz

He, of course, demonstrated the existence of electromagnetic waves. The fact that light is actually waves of electric and magnetic fields was predicted theoretically by J.C. Maxwell some years before (when he introduced the crucial part into the equations of electromagnetism which describes how electrical fields can create magnetic fields in mid-air without the presence of charges), and Hertz is the guy who showed the world that this is not only true, but that these waves can be easily created using electrical equipment. The rest is, as they say, history.

Where do I even start with this guy....

John v. Neumann

One of the most intimidating minds of the 20th century, he kind of knew everything. The architecture of modern computers is called von Neumann architecture for a reason. He's in this thread because he laid the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, but he was also a leading thinker in game theory. When he heard of the work John Nash got his Nobel prize for, he allegedly wasn't very impressed. He knew that all along, but didn't bother writing it down because it was kind of trivial.

Eugene Wigner

While he is known to the wider public as a key figure of the Manhattan project, Eugene Wigner is the man who showed how the mathematical theory of groups can be used to think about symmetries in quantum mechanics and solid state physics. That was absolutely central to understanding atomic physics, semiconductors, and all that. A towering genius in both physics and mathematics, he nevertheless wasn't the best student in his maths class - because he had John von Neumann as a class mate back in Budapest. Man, being that math teacher must have been quite the exhausting experience.
