Anime vs. Cartoons

On the whole, I think I've gotten more viewing pleasure out of cartoons than anime.
But I like both. And both have shit shows. Actually, if you get down to it, in both; there is more crap than good stuf. But the same goes for any medium from books to YouTube clips to tv-shows and music. For every 'Sakamoto desu ga?', 'deathnote' & 'One Punch man' on the one hand and futurama, south park & Darkwing Duck on the other, you have dozens and dozens of inferior shows.
In any case, I applaud the mixing of these two styles we see more often nowadays. Avatar the Last Airbender, and the legend of Korra, are two of my favorite shows of the past decade-and-a-half. And I'd label them either both cartoon and anime, or at least a hybrid of the two.

It depends entirely on the genre and time. For example, it's difficult to equate earlier classics like Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Doomed Megalopolis, Fist of the North Star, Evengelion or Totoro to modern classics like Death Note, Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online, Stein's Gate, Bleach or A Silent Voice. The cultural paradigms are too different but there are some parallels. You could split classics in to the 5 modern core themes: teenage titillation (e.g. High School DxD), extreme violence (e.g. Blue Exorcist), sci-fi/fantasy (e.g. Active Raid), action (e.g. One Man Punch) or high-end art (e.g. Kaguya hime no monogatari).

I think it's a disservice to try and stereotype titillating anime as the main form, simply because the teenagers love it and it sells well (its roots in hentai are too well understood) but, the fact is it sells well so you're going to see lots of it. For the discerning fan though, there's more than enough other content to enjoy without having to look at teenage boobs all the time.

The only anime that really did it for me was Death note, I've been since forever searching for another anime that could make me not want to sleep without seeing the next episode

Well that and Naruto(without the fillers). I think I've watched other animes like Samurai Shamploo, attack on titan etc but I quickly got bored. Death note was the best. Never had another anime, series, movie, anything really keep me so excited to see what would happen the next episode.

I liked deathnote and can say it's a good anime. However, I think the hype around it kept me from enjoying it fully. It's like I didn't get to like it of my own accord, I kind of had to like it. Despite the fact that I can't point out anything right now, and maybe only a little when I think about it, that was wrong with it.

I recently watched black lagoon. And was pleasantly surprised, despite some of the character interactions not making sense or being poorly translated (couldn't find sub, had to go dub). If I'd watched that show 15 years ago, it would probably have been my favorite anime. It also made me realize the east looks at weaponry in a different way than the west. Weapons, including guns, are more of an extension of the self in anime. While in cartoons, they tend to be more like a tool anyone can use. It's like... anime treats gunfights as if they are sword-fights.

I guess I was lucky because the first anime I watched was Death note. I think I was bored or something so I was browsing through google to find something good to watch and I found the name "Death note" in a lot of place so I figured I'll check it out. I wasn't a huge fan of the whole anime scene then and I was almost expecting to get disappointed. Best experience ever, I don't think I'll experience that again

Imho really fucking good! It's a modern spin on traditional Japanese ghost stories, steeped in manga tradition. The first episode is over 10 years old now! I'm a fan of Death Note too so hopefully you'll like it.

What about the cliff hangers? Does it have them a lot? I absolutely LOVE cliffhangers :
whatll happen next whatll happen next. does it have lots of twists? Like the psychological warfare of L and K or like how everybody thought they were toast in that mission shikamaru led to retrieve sasuke and then there they are the sand ninjas come to the rescue KaChA CLinG clinG BAKA!!
