Let's say someone is female (or male) but born in the "wrong body", so they are the opposite sex to their biology. Now, that's their gender identity they don't have to conform to any sort of gender role.

They can be born biologically male, but feel and identify as female, but behave totally masculine and not at all "womanly" for instance.

So, in summary: I'd argue that while gender roles are a social construct, and biological sex is a genetic construct... I'd say that gender identity is a personal construct.

I have never taken a course/class like this before, but I see your point. If gender is societal/cultural constructed rather than biological and people should not be limited by gender, how can we be born into the "wrong" one?

Anyway I think this is interesting and I'm yet to do some more research into it.

Sorry shadow there is no contradiction let's turn to science shall according to the APA transgender is defined as

Quote:Transgender is an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth.
http://www.apa.org/topics/lgbt/transgender.aspx

As for the idea it's arbitrary

Quote:In particular, APA explicitly states in their FAQs to sexual orientation and transgender that it is not merely a matter of self-identification or choice. Thus, being LGBT is not something you are because you have a certain self-identification
