60 years ago today, September 25th, 1957 , the 101st Airborne Division escorted nine black students into Central High School. The Arkansas governor was using the Arkansas National Guard to keep the state's schools segregated.
These students were spat on, called names, suspended for the slightest infractions (like accidentally dropping a bowl of chili on to a white student). White girls locked one of the black students into a bathroom stall and tried to set her on fire.
Now they have statues in their honor.
