Yeah, I'm old enough to remember this happening and what an awful shock it was for the country. Bridges have life spans, wear and tear is cumulative and a lack of redundant load paths can lead to a rapid collapse of even the sturdiest looking bridges.
The name, Silver Bridge stemmed from it being a very early bridge to be painted with aluminum paint. Hence the shiny color. The form of the bridge was interesting too. Combining suspension and truss elements the span had high rigidity and was economical of materials in construction too. But, a single slowly growing crack in one of the eyebars was all it took to bring it down during rush hour.
