I get that they're the way they are on purpose, but perspective and proportions are all fucked up, and I find it hard not to think of it as amateur, though I'm sure they're very talented artists. It's just the way it gets interpreted in my mind.

Look at those two paintings THIS way. They are not "trying to be weird." They express emotion mixed in with realism. For Nude in Bathtub, it may help to realize that the subject of the painting was the artist's wife who died of cancer years before he painted it. There is a lot of emotion conveyed in the distortion. The actual painting is really big too. Hard to coney it online. It's like 8 feet tall. When you stand in front of it, the colors really work on your eyes.

One does not need to know the cancer story in order to appreciate it, but it may help to view it with this in mind, as you can see it more as a peice that encapsulates the inward feeling involved in the expression... much like Van Gogh.

Yep, I feel stuff seeing those ones as well. Looks like I do have feelings after all.

Nah, seriously though, my gf said she enjoyed the film too, without seeing the show.

I didn't like anything in the film. From the acting to the special effects to the slow fighting pace to the skipped storyparts (which I understand in a film-adaptation but still) to the impossible time-table (Zhao has a teleporter I swear) to the weak introduction of the fire-lord to ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF EXPOSITION to ...
I could go on. I don't think I would have liked the film, even if I hadn't seen the show. The show is fucking amazing though. And this film doesn't do anything to tear that down. But it is an unnecessary adaptation that just failed on so many levels. And even more obviously when you know the source material, I guess.

Have you seen the show since, Shell?

I think that's a bit what I meant by saying "trying to be weird." A lot of artists make an effort to do more than just paint what's in front of them. It doesn't always appeal to my eye. I'll give you that Nude in Bathtub is very creepy, which is probably because it was painted from pain. As for van Gogh, I don't know why his work appeals to me. I knew of it long before I knew of him. Maybe it's the use of color. Maybe I sensed the emotion. I don't know.

All of that said, I think people should like what they like when it comes to art. Life's too short.

I didn't think it was anything to write home about, to be sure. Still, it was fun for kids, had some decent effects/action, etc. No worse or better than most of action/fantasy movies.

I haven't caught the show since. I have a hard time enjoying cartoons if they're meant to be serious. Only very few have a good enough story for me to suspend disbelief. I prefer funny cartoons. We've been meaning to give Spirited Away a chance, though.

Spirited Away  is a good film . There are some genuinely dark scenes in the film . On the other hand there are some heart  string scenes . It's my 3rd favorite Ghibli film.

To each their own, I guess. Big Grin
I didn't like the effects myself. But I don't know how other fantasy films stack up on that front. I've seen Narnia once and I've forgotten most of it because it wasn't appealing to me at all. Never seen the golden compass either. Harry Potter had some wonky moments in the special effects, though I haven't seen those all that often. I remember the last movies being quite convincing in the special effects department though.Haven't seen the hunger games or the one in which all the kids are roman/greek gods or whatever... Perhaps the effects were decent in comparison, but they didn't appeal to me.
I want to watch spirited away too. Maybe tonight, now you reminded me. I think it's on netflix, right?

There are so many really fine painters working in realism today. It's a shame that the hype-machine prevents them from getting the attention they deserve. It's kind of too bad that the traditional visual arts are so marginalized now-a-days.
