When you sleep your consciousness can not be aware right?
In matter the consciousness lie in a latent subjugation similar to when you are sleeping.
The difference however is that in the matter this subjugation last for ages and ages or millions of years while in your sleep may last only few hours.
Until the consciousness is allowed to get out this subjugation the matter stay matter but when after millions of years the awakening take place like in uranium and other minerals then the energy-consciousness start her movement towards more evolved form of lives such as plants and this movement never stop until it reach the goal of life through the evolution process so everything is alive although it may be forced to lie in subjugation for sometime.
