Apparently, by all accounts, Herod the Great was a nasty piece of work, having one of his wives and two of his sons executed, but there's no real corroboration that anything like the Massacre of the Innocents happened. Not saying it's totally out of character for him to have done such a thing, but only the Gospel of Matthew mentions it. That's literally the only historical source (such as it is) detailing such an event. No other corroboration has occurred, not even in the other three Gospels.

Well, I read that those poor children are 1. martyrs for Christianity (although they were Jewish)
2. Josephus didn't write about them because the obscure village was small and there could not be more than a hundred of babies, so he figured that there was more interesting stuff to write about

Call it ALL mythology, if you must. But this mythology intertwined with the history of the Western civilization
and I can assume shaped our mentality... your mentality as well, I daresay.
Perhaps, these stories even made us better people (well, at least some of us).
Anyway, if Herod was one of the characters in the Game of Thrones, you would say that this massacre of children was a horrendous act. Right?
