Identical twins transition together

Identical twins Jack and Jace Grafe are sharing their story for the first time about transitioning together.

Born in Georgia, the brothers spoke with Fox5 Atlanta about coming out and then undergoing the journey side-by-side.

‘It’s like being in prison except it’s in your own body,’ Jack said. ‘And the older I got, the harder it was to swallow. And I was like, can’t do this for the rest of my life, I just can’t do it.’

Now both 23, Jack and Jace initially came out to one another when they were 15.

‘With him there, we had each other’s back,’ Jace said. ‘We looked out for each other.’

The pair attended a private Christian school in a small town in the state. As soon as they left school, they each made some changes to live their lives more authentically. Jace said he immediately cut his hair and wore new clothes.

It was easier with each other. Jace explained: ‘I feel like we’ve saved each other from a lot of really dark and depressing moments.

‘Sometimes, I wonder if he wasn’t here, if I would have been by myself, if I would have had suicidal thoughts. I’m not saying I would have, but it’s very possible. I would have been most definitely alone.’

Numerous studies have shown that transgender youth are more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers.

At 21, they both began taking hormone injections. Earlier this year, in August, they both underwent top surgery on the same day.

They both now also have driver’s licenses reflecting their gender identity.

‘It’s like the biggest relief you could ever feel,’ Jack said about all the progress they’ve made.

Jace added: ‘I’m just excited to finally go out there and be exactly what I’ve been dreaming about for a long time.’
