That’s eerie. Our commencement speaker at university said almost the same thing, something along the lines of, ‘Passion can blind you to your abilities. Know your limits and fight like hell to reach them.’

LOL< I wanted to be an artist when I was a kid (any kind, really).

Yeah, I don't have that kind of discipline or talent.  Turns out I'm better at digging holes and pushing people into doing things (and holes). The Wife appreciated that one..she sells jobs and people for a living.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I suppose, in a manner of speaking, I had the passion of not working for a living.  So I became a musician.

Nailed it.

So jelly.  Now, you're also a luthier though..right, or am I mis-remembering? That'd be more my speed than actually playing the damned things for a living. I can make anything..anything except for art. Wink

I took my passion, I made it happen.
All I can say is, what a feeling!

No, you’ve remembered correctly. Music got to be too much like a regular job. I wanted a change but wasn’t really qualified for anything else. Then a friend pointed that I’d always maintained my own gear (as well as that of other people in the trade), so it wasn’t really much of a step to become a luthier.

Hard to consider it ‘work’ though. At any given time I have 10-20 pieces out on spec and do custom work only when it suits me.
