External hard drive has lost all its data
February 22, 2019 at 9:04 pm
About a year ago, I bought a LACIE 500Gb external hard drive, I wanted to have a drive which used an external power source.
Used it for larger files, mainly videos, a total of about 350GB
Had not used it for about 6 months.
Yesterday,I attached it to my Imac. When I opened it, the only thing showing was one folder; "BUDA"
As far as I'm aware it's unusual for a hard drive to suddenly delete everything. That leads me to believe there is a software issue. That the files are probably still there.
I also have a laptop, which runs Windows 10 and Linux Mint Cinnamon, as dual boot.. have also tried the Lacie drive on each OS. Same result.
Does anyone happen to know of any troubleshooting I can do?

Excellent. Thank you so much.
-I'm really out of touch with Windows; these days I mainly use the Imac and Linux on the laptop. (crap Celeron processor, Linux is faster. My fault, the PC was cheap, should have bought a better one)
ADDENDUM;
Have installed "EaseUS data Recovery Wizard".So far has recovered 2678 files, with 5 hours to go.
What can I say? I'm so pleased I could just shit.
ADDENDUM: Just discovered "EaseUS ' ain't free.
I may buy it if it's cheap enough.

Oh, I've been there, so I don't hesitate to provide what little information I can come up with. Good luck to you.

Well, they wanted $50. I looked around and found a free app called "Disc Drill" .It's very slow, but works.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, saved me a lot of stuffing around.
It found a LOT of stuff which had been deleted. The drive is 500GB. The recovered material is over 1TB, but I can choose what to recover. I think I might need to do some sifting.

All I can offer is brass knuckles and pepper spray. Or lighter fluid and matches.

Glad you're getting it sorted. If it happens again, try whinging in a plaintive voice, 'Honey, how do I fix this?' It works more often than it doesn't.

Who's Honey? My dog's name is Major, an unbelievably loud and distressingly energetic Jack Russell terrier.
I have lived alone for long time.
One benefit of living alone has been the eliminating the common learned helplessness of the Aussie male. Any problems, I go online.
Whirlpool Forum is especially helpful. However, on this occasion, the most practical help came from here.
