One epi of "Lone Star Law" has them removing a gator by the simple expedient of winching it onto a wrecker. Fourteen feet, IIRC. It wasn't scared of humans, and to the wardens that meant it had to go.

It's easy to say the poacher's death was a good thing when none of us are so poor that we'd be forced to hunt dangerous animals so we can feed our families.
His family are probably now fucked with the loss of their bread winner.

Maybe he could have hunted dangerous animals not endangered and not on a game reserve.

Rhino horn fetches a higher price than gold or cocaine.  If the man's concern was feeding his family, he could have killed a gazelle or wildebeest. Rhinos are not food animals.

We don't know he had a family to feed. We don't know that he had no other choices. We don't know that he wasn't just after some easy money through killing something he knows is endangered.

Couldn't he have just made the money to feed his family by killing some other animal, one that isn't critically endangered and living in a protected area?

Rhino poaching is an extremely high risk venture.  If the man was thinking of his family, maybe he could have picked something with a lower chance of being killed and eaten by wild animals in an area where he shouldn't have been in the first place.  Because of his decision to try and poach a rhino, his family have lost their breadwinner. He was committing a criminal act that was the result of stupid choices, no matter how noble his motives may have been.

And look at it this way - if the elephant hadn't killed him, the lions might not have eaten that day.  Circle of life and all that.

I saw this on the internet earlier today, and  this asshole got what he deserved.

But how does one feel, outside a reserve, if a dangerous animal gets near your home or your children?  Even in America, like where I live, we have gators, but even morso in Florida. I get not killing endangered species. But even in America dangerous animals can and do get near non reserve homes. 

For example, if I had a kid, and  a gator was in my back yard feet from the kid, and my only option was to shoot the gator, I would.

I am sure outside poaching, outside reserves, families interact with dangerous animals. I am against poachers for sure. But outside poaching, how do you keep the balance between protecting nature, and protecting your family?

Generally the animals where there first. If you move to a land that has gators in it take precautions. Or don't move to gator country.
