Because arabic numerals are the numerals we use... pretty much the world over.

I put up a new mailbox years ago. The mailman left me a nasty note saying I needed to put numbers on it.

I did.

I saw him a week later - and he said " Very cute.. This isn't Rome."

I said "Whatta ya want? Arabic?".

"No - REGULAR NUMBERS!"...

My mother lived at a four-way stop in the country. She could see two other houses, neither very near. Her mailman used to bring the boxes my brother and I sent her into her house for her, and waited to see what she'd got this time. He tried to buy the swords off of her every time.
