A question about WINE

I believe there are commercial versions of WINE where you are paying for professional setup. I would go this route if I was serious about it because as Succubus said, it's a royal pain in the ass. Getting Windows apps to run under Linux is possible but it's not a trivial thing.

Because I don't know if I somehow misconfigured WINE, and if a well-configured WINE would actually run my program properly, or if my program indeed can't be run on WINE. WINE is insanely hard to configure to run anything but Minesweeper or Notepad.

For the life of me I can't understand why anyone would jump through so many hoops in order to run Widows software in a Linux system. Wine and the various virtual machines are one royal pain in the arse to set up. Why not dual boot Windows and Linux?

Neither WINE nor virtual machines are a royal pain in the arse to set up, at least from my recollection of using WINE maybe 5-6 years ago. Granted I haven't used it since then but it would be odd if it got worse over time.

As for VMs, they are insanely easy to set up. I use several. Dual booting rarely makes any sense anymore unless you absolutely need both OSes to directly interface with the computer hardware.

Because if I try to install Windows 10 directly on my Acer Nitro 5, I get a BSOD. Setting it up in a virtual machine is relatively easy, but virtual machines are slow as hell (perhaps mostly because VirtualBox, for some reason that escapes me, doesn't let me to assign more than 1 GB of RAM and 128 MB of VRAM to a virtual machine, even though I have 8 GB of RAM). Apps running on WINE are allegedly even faster than ones running on Windows.
Linux also boots rather slowly, because it logs a lot of ACPI errors during the booting. Acer offers some BIOS bug-fixes on its website... that you need to run Windows directly on hardware to apply.

I just remembered that I still need to flash the BIOS on the third raid controller. Seeing as the file server currently doesn't seem to like any PCIE video card I put in it, I've been diverted to bringing the video processing server back online in order to test the PCI video card I recently bought. The SSD on that machine failed, leaving me with a copy of Windows XP on the primary disk, instead of the Windows 10 I had been running. Attempting to hook up the disk that I had stored the disk images on, I find that it's GPT instead of MBR, and so the cloning software I have installed on XP can't read it. FML.
