They tried that the pattern degrades in the buffer . The only person who's go half way there is Scotty and that was dumb luck .

Even more curious - why do they leave the bridge to go to the transporter room? Why not just transport from the bridge to the planet? For that matter - why waste all the space on corridors? Just transport wherever you need to go.

I can't win.  I say 'Trekkers' and I get called a Visigoth.  I say 'Trekkies' and get called insensitive.

That's it.  From now on, you lot are 'Roddenberries'.

I would suspect that the larger ships are capable of doing it, but they have crew do it manually in case something goes wrong.

Anyway, what would transporter techs do all day?

Fair point.  These ships appear to be largely constructed of breakdownium - something ALWAYS goes wrong.

My guess is that the SAG requires a minimum number of actors to receive screen time.

Too be fair we generally only see the ship when it's in crisis . I'm sure the Enterprise was not exploding every Tuesday

Well yeah we have to see Miles Obrien at least once every few episodes on TNG

Come on.

Any "explanation" involving any of the words "quantum", "polarity", "phase" and "singularity" will suffice to provide complete clarity regarding why that, or indeed anything else in star trek, is so.

How can you call yourself a trekkie without realizing this you two bit Ferangi!

Yes, you are correct that they were used to both transport within a ship and to other vessels/planets.
Also I have a theory that most people feel more comfortable with a human in charge of reassembling their molecules rather then a computer .

Who else aboard a starship can be called "chief" if there is no one manning the transporter?

Besides, the ominous implications of the transport coming back to life after the Chief shuts it down and walks away would hardly be as ominous if there is no chief to walk away?

Why on earth (not literally) do they replicate synthonol instead of replicating actual very high quality alcohol? It's not like it saves electricity or anything Dunno

Synthehol is supposed to have a milder buzz than ethanol - and no hangover.

The real question is can the replicator turn out a good dose of mescaline?

On Enterprise and Voyager, learn to play the violin? Seeing as they're not allowed to do their jobs on either ship. I think Hoshi has operated the transporter more often than the whole transporter technician complement put together.
