I don't quite understand your analogy. I have proven I know something about programming, on my GitHub profile. Now, whether that's exactly what the employers need, probably not. But, for God's sake, how is a junior programmer supposed to know everything the employer is looking for?
It's not like I know only the useless stuff that's asked on programming competitions (though I know quite a bit about those things also), so that I am not employable in spite of my supposed knowledge.
