Regarding virgins. The royals of many countries required virginity from their sons' wives to ensure that any little bastards born were right royal bastards. Mary's husband was provided with a way to not kill her for being pregnant before they had been conjugal. "She's preggers, but no MAN did it. Get down there and have look, mate, if you don't believe." (And, of course, the presence of a hymen doesn't prove "innocence".)
