I think the most poignant euphemism for death is 'got away'.  It's only religious in a very tangential sense and became common during the periods of starvation and oppression in Ireland.  The best sense of the term is that the deceased had finally escaped from a life of misery and want.

Perhaps it's a regional/generational term; the chances of encountering death increases with age, and therefore encountering death-related euphemisms. I'll probably hear it more often the older I get.

No, not really. If you live in America and have watched movies/television on a semi-regular basis in the past... oh IDK, 5 to 100 years, you've probably heard the term.

Maybe you don't watch many movies or very much television?
