Not all races on this planet have gone farther than bows and arrows. There are still remote tribes in South America and SE Asia that are very primitive. The Australian Aborigine was also such, until Europeans arrived.
What do you class as intelligent life? A race of grunting hairy bipedal spear throwers or the modern, technologically superior man. The answer is obvious, however if a bipedal humanlike being has evolved elsewhere it may not have got out of first gear and could still be running around in loin cloths and bare feet!!
Most of Africa was occupied by very primitive people a few hundred years ago.
If life starts as we know it did here on Earth, and gradually evolves over a very long period of time then maybe we are an accident of nature. It seems odd that we share so much of our make-up with the apes yet they have changed little if at all from the original animal.

Atheists will have to argue more intelligently then think that the discovery of life outside Earth is going to shake the religious community. If anything else, it will only further support God who is already considered "almighty". If God can create Earth and all it's inhabitants, what's stopping Him from creating alien life forms and other yet to be discovered knowledge?

From moderates I actually heard that they believe the creation story was simplified but intended to include all of the universe as well, so alien lifeforms wouldn't be conflicting for them ("the world" being created by God including all of the universe, not just our planet).
The same people pretend animals go to heaven as well, though.

But most religions claim that their people is the Chosen Ones.
How does that fit with God whoring around, seeding other planets?

I think it would probably be worse if when aliens landed...instead of killing us....they torched us mentally and/or physically - because that's how they feed, or recharge - and they did this in such a way that it lasted for a long long long long while indeed.
On the other hand they could actually turn up and be very friendly and helpful. Maybe invincible from our weapons because they're so advanced, so they wouldn't have to defend themselves. Maybe they recharge in the opposite way to the above example; maybe they feed by helping for example. Maybe it's because they're equivelent of DNA works in a slightly - even completely - different way. Maybe they come from another dimension for example.
Or they could land and something in-between could happen.
