In the new study, researchers analyzed chemical remains found within four sphero-conical containers that were uncovered at a site called Armenian Gardens in Jerusalem and date to between the 11th and 12th centuries. The team found that one container was likely used to hold oil, another two stored scented materials, such as perfume or medicine, while the final container was laced with traces of explosive materials — hinting that it was used as a handheld explosive device.

oh, the holy hand grenade is of Antioch.   It would not have the right ring of pompous humility if it were said to be of Jerusalem.

Under Italian law, the finder of any artifact more than 50 years old that has ‘artistic value’ must turn it over to the proper authorities. The finder and the own of the land are entitled to a reward figured as a percentage of what the market price would be. Failure to hand it is makes you subject to hefty finds and prison sentences.

So, yeah, I’d hand it in.

Doubtful,  unless there is testimony or other direct evidence for the act, like coconspirators ratting. 

Even if the authority does an isotopic signature on the gold, how can you prove the lump actually came from the destroyed artifact and not from gold extracted from the same mine?

Why do that. The price of a gold ingot is going to be a lot less than the value of recovered Roman coins.
