Geologically there is no possibility whatsoever that the literal interpretation of Plato’s description of Atlantis can be true.    Plato probably spun a tall tale to help make a point, and the tale may have recalled some faint echo of a memory passed down through the mist of distant past of some sizable populated area being rapidly inundated.      There are actually a number of archaeologically attested occasions when such inundation occurred in the Mediterranean and its surrounds.

It seems as barren an exercise to speculate which of these historic inundation events were the one that got blown up to an immeasurably bigger size to become the Atlantis of legend as it is to speculate which actual human got blown up into superstitiously overarching size to become Jesus one with god.

Spot on. The best candidate would be Numenor, which was destroyed after Ar-Pharazon dared to set foot on the Undying Lands. Thereafter, the island was referred to (in Quenya) as Atalantë , meaning 'the downfallen'.

Archaeologist Maciej Stromski said: ‘We discovered examples of belief in the dead returning from the grave, which could only be stopped by decapitation.

‘It was believed that if a member of the deceased's family died shortly after the funeral, then he or she could be a vampire.

‘Therefore, after burial, the grave was dug up and the deceased's head was cut off, which was then placed in the legs.

‘We also discovered an example of a woman after decapitation.

‘The skull of a child was laid on her bosom.’

In September last year, the remains of a 'female vampire' pinned to the ground by a sickle across her throat and a padlocked toe to 'prevent her returning from the dead' were also found in Poland.

Records of myths about the undead date back as far as the 11th century in Central Europe.

People feared that some who were buried would claw their way back up to the surface as blood-sucking monsters, and terrorise the living.

It is not uncommon the region to find burial sites where a metal rod - or a stake - have been hammered through the skull of the deceased.

People at the time believed this was one way to ensuring the person stayed dead.

Half-million-year-old wooden structure unearthed in Zambia

The discovery of ancient wooden logs in the banks of a river in Zambia has changed archaeologists' understanding of ancient human life.

Researchers found evidence the wood had been used to build a structure almost half a million years ago.

The findings, published in the journal Nature, suggest stone-age people built what may have been shelters.

"This find has changed how I think about our early ancestors," archaeologist Prof Larry Barham said.

"They used their intelligence, imagination and skills to create something they'd never seen before, something that had never previously existed."

The researchers also uncovered ancient wooden tools, including digging sticks. But what excited them most were two pieces of wood found at right angles to each other.

Archaeologists from Europe and Africa have uncovered the oldest wood structure ever discovered, dating back almost half a million years — meaning an unknown species of hominins, predating us homo sapiens, was presumably responsible for its creation.

The researchers laid out their findings in a recent paper in the science journal Nature, where they reported that they had found the wood structure of "two interlocking logs joined transversely by an intentionally cut notch" at a site in Kalambo Falls, Zambia, and dated it to a distant 476,000 years ago. At the same location, which the scientists say was likely the foundation for a dwelling or platform, they also found four tools fashioned from wood: a digging stick, a cut log, a wedge, and notched branch, each also dating to before the time of modern humans.

"This find has changed how I think about our early ancestors," said University of Liverpool archaeology professor and the paper's lead author Larry Barham in a statement. "Forget the label ‘Stone Age,’ look at what these people were doing: they made something new, and large, from wood. They used their intelligence, imagination, and skills to create something they’d never seen before, something that had never previously existed."
