Of course  I have - and of course I know.
That's one of the points I wanted to talk about.
That's why  I mentioned  Wales, Hungary, Albania.
And you forgot to mention Magyarország.

Btw: If a very stupid person calls my question stupid because it goes over his very narrow horizon, then I know that my question was OK.

Do we call it the United States of America?

Or the United States?

Or The US?

Or America?

Or Youelectedwhoasyourpresidentyoudumbfucks?

We don’t call ourselves that.  We lack the attention span to go even a third of the way through that.

Now some say that it would be a point of Honour and Politeness to call all  countries be the names that   they use themselves.

What do you think about it?

As an example:
May we say Hungary, or must we say Magyarország, the way the country calls itself?

Not practical.

Especially for multilingual countries that call itself by different names according to the language.   But generally for most countries whose language contain sounds or pronunciation rules substantially different from your own.

Here is a short list of German cities and their names in English

Hameln - Hamelin
Köln - Cologne
München - Munich
Nürnberg - Nuremberg
Regensburg - Ratisbon

Now if those politically correct people are to be believed, the good citizens of those towns should be very offended and insulted and in tears, because somewhere in this world there are some who do not use the "correct" names of their home towns.

Only those who have no idea of how languages work can think of such politically correct nonsense.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the white west pronounces "Japan" "Japan" but isn't the native pronunciation "Nippon"?

You’re wrong. The Japanese pronunciation of ‘Japan’ is ‘Japan’. The Japanese name for Japan is ‘Nippon’ or ‘Nihon’

Oh my Thor, how would I know, I was only married to a Japanese woman. Trust me, they don't pronounce "Japan" "Japan" that is a western pronunciation. The name for Japan as you said is "Nippon" or "Nihon". "Japan" is a western mispronunciation.

My home town is An Baile Meanach, and I’m not remotely offended when people call it Ballymena.

No, ‘Japan’ is a Western name.

If you say to a Japanese, ‘Say “Japan”,’ you’ll hear ‘Japan’. If you ask them the name of their country, you’ll hear ‘Nippon’.

She (your ex-wife) did get her green card for her trouble, didn't she?
